Some performances beg to be liked. Plainview begs to be believed.
Day-Lewis builds a man whose hunger has its own accent. Rate believability first. Presence second.
Sympathy is not the metric
If your score drops because Plainview is monstrous, you are grading morality. ActorRating grades embodiment. Can you believe this man’s appetite as an internal weather system — milkshake speech and all — without needing him to be redeemable?
What “technical” means here
It is not accent tourism. It is the long construction of a body that has decided other people are raw material. Watch how Day-Lewis plays listening as scouting. Watch how affection curdles into strategy.
Believability → Presence → Chemistry (especially with Paul Dano’s Eli) is a clean order for this one. Emotional Range matters too, but Plainview’s range is a narrowing funnel, not a showcase reel.
If you only remember the quotes, re-rate the silences.
