Zendaya’s 2026 double is a study in power with different permissions.
As Athena in The Odyssey, she is allowed to rearrange destinies. As MJ in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, she is not allowed to remember the destiny she already lived. One role has too much knowledge. The other has a hole where knowledge should be.
That is catnip for ActorRating — if you score the craft instead of the celebrity event.
Athena: do not play “mysterious girlfriend to the myth”
Athena loves Odysseus as a project of excellence. The danger is modern casting gravity: beautiful actor + soft close-ups = romance default.
What to watch for instead:
- Strategic warmth — care that looks like planning
- Status that does not apologize — gods do not negotiate tone the way humans do
- Attention as weapon — who she looks at, and who she refuses to decorate with empathy
If your Chemistry slider spikes only because Holland is also in the movie, interrogate it. Athena’s primary chemistry is with Odysseus (Damon) and with the idea of clever survival. Telemachus may get her interest; he should not get her whole temperature.
MJ: the performance of moving on
Post-No Way Home, MJ’s hardest work is not “will they reconnect.” It is whether Zendaya can play a full life that does not orbit Peter — while the camera and the audience keep trying to make it orbit him anyway.
That is an acting problem about frame resistance. Can she refuse nostalgia bait? Can she make MIT-era MJ specific — ambition, irritation, new rhythms — rather than a living souvenir?
When she shares space with Holland again, rate the asymmetry:
- His eyes know a private language
- Hers are fluent in a different dialect of the same face
If the scene becomes mutual longing on autopilot, somebody failed the brief. If it feels like two overlapping movies in one doorway, somebody succeeded.
Criteria cheat sheet
Athena
- Presence over likability
- Technical control of stillness / ritual speech
- Chemistry as patronage, not romance-first
MJ
- Believability of a continued self
- Emotional Range without “I miss him” neon signs
- Chemistry as interruption, not reunion soundtrack
The career argument
Challengers already proved Zendaya can dominate a movie by appetite and silence. Dune proved she can play destiny without begging the camera. Odyssey and Brand New Day ask whether she can do both mythic authority and intimate discontinuity in the same calendar window.
Log both. Compare both. Argue about both.
Just do not collapse them into “Zendaya had a moment.” Moments are marketing. Scorecards are the point.
